Free Things to Do in New York This Week

A weekly journal of the parks, museums, public events, and seasonal pleasures of New York that cost nothing at all. Updated often.

The great myth about New York is that you need money to enjoy it. The opposite is true. The most New York things you can do — a long walk through a park, an hour in a museum, a free concert at sunset — cost nothing at all. This is a running journal of what is happening in the city this week, updated as the season changes.

In the Parks

Summer brings free outdoor concerts, Shakespeare in the Park, dance performances at Lincoln Center, and movie nights on lawns from Brooklyn to the Hudson. In fall, the city's parks throw harvest markets and quiet jazz afternoons. In winter, the holiday windows turn Fifth Avenue into a free museum after dark. In spring, the cherry blossoms in Central Park and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden are an event in themselves.

Museums Without a Ticket

Several major museums offer suggested or pay-what-you-wish admission for New York residents, and some have specific free hours for everyone. Smaller museums — the Hispanic Society in Washington Heights, the National Museum of the American Indian downtown, the African Burial Ground National Monument — are free always, and quietly extraordinary.

Public Events

Check the official New York City Parks calendar, the High Line's events page, and the Lincoln Center summer programming for current free listings. Local libraries host free readings, lectures, and concerts year-round.

Outdoor and Seasonal

The Staten Island Ferry, always free, has the best skyline view in the city. Riverside Park, Hudson River Park, and Brooklyn Bridge Park are open dawn to one in the morning. The greenmarket at Union Square is a free education in what the season is doing.

The most expensive city in America gives away its best afternoons for nothing.
