There is a particular pleasure in staying somewhere long enough to have a 'usual.' A coffee shop where the barista nods at you on day three. A bench in a quiet park that becomes, for the week, yours. The streets around The International Cozy Inn are full of small places like this. Here are a few we send guests toward when they ask.
A Small Park You Will Probably Have to Yourself
Two blocks from our front door, there is a pocket park tucked between two townhouses. A few benches, a fountain, a tree that loses its leaves dramatically in October. Bring your coffee. Bring a book. Stay longer than you planned.
The Coffee We Drink
There is a small espresso bar around the corner that opens at six in the morning. The owner roasts on Sundays. The pastries come from a bakery a few blocks east. Order a flat white and a croissant. Sit at the window. You will not need the wifi.
A Restaurant Without a Sign
There is a small Italian place a short walk away that does not advertise. No website, no Instagram, no listed phone number. You walk in, you sit down, you eat what is good that night. This is the kind of place New Yorkers protect, so we will only say: ask Marlene at the front desk, and she will tell you which door.
A Bookstore for an Afternoon
Used books, hardcover fiction, art monographs, a poetry section that takes itself seriously. Brick walls, dim lighting, a cat that lives on the counter. Spend an hour. Buy something you cannot read on a plane.
A Bench With a View
Walk west until you hit a tree-lined avenue. Find the third bench on the left. The view is not famous. It is just a quiet New York street, a row of brownstones, and the late afternoon light catching the upper windows. Sit anyway.
