An Arts Day in Harlem: The Studio Museum and the Apollo
Harlem's cultural institutions sit within a few blocks of one another around 125th Street. Here's one easy way to put a day together.
A good arts day in Harlem doesn't need much planning. Much of what you'll want to see gathers around 125th Street, a short walk from 248 Lenox Avenue, so you can follow the day as it unfolds rather than plotting every hour.
The Studio Museum in Harlem, at 144 West 125th Street, is a lovely place to begin. It's dedicated to artists of African descent and has long been at the heart of the neighborhood's creative life. Exhibitions and visiting hours change through the year, so have a look at the museum's own visit page while you're planning and you'll know exactly what's on.
The Apollo is the other great anchor. Its historic theater on 125th Street is closed for renovation at the moment, and performances continue at Apollo Stages at The Victoria a short distance along the same street. If you're buying tickets, the listing will tell you which stage to head for.
In between, the street itself is part of the visit. These blocks carry a century of Harlem's history in their storefronts and facades, and the walk from one venue to the other is short and full of things to notice.
If you'd like a shape for the day, try the museum late morning, a long lunch and a wander down Lenox Avenue or Frederick Douglass Boulevard in the afternoon, then back to your suite to change before an evening performance. Coming home in between is one of the quiet advantages of staying in the neighborhood.
