Best Restaurants Near Central Park

A curated, unhurried guide to dining near the park: casual lunches, date-night corners, quiet coffee, and the kind of neighborhood favorites locals do not always share.

Eating well near Central Park is easier than the guidebooks make it sound. The trick is to walk a block or two off the park itself. The streets that face the green tend to know they have a view. The streets behind them tend to actually cook.

For a Quiet Lunch

On the Upper East Side, look for the small French and Italian bistros on Madison and Lexington in the seventies. A bowl of soup, a glass of rosé, a window seat, and an unhurried waiter is a good lunch in any language. On the Upper West Side, the Jewish appetizing shops still do what they have done for a century, and a sit-down sandwich there is its own small celebration.

For a Memorable Dinner

A short walk south of the park puts you in reach of some of the most serious dining rooms in the city. Book ahead. Dress better than you think you need to. Order what the server actually recommends. The classic Midtown grills, with their leather banquettes and their carts of martinis, are worth seeing once even if it is not the food you would chase at home.

For a Coffee Worth Sitting For

Skip the chains on the avenues. Walk a side street until you find a café that smells of espresso and not pastry. Order it for here, sit by the window, and treat it as a destination rather than fuel.

For an Evening at Home

The corner markets near the park are better than they look. A good loaf, a wedge of cheese, fruit from a sidewalk stand, a bottle of wine. Carry it back to your suite, open the window, and have a meal that costs less than a side dish in midtown and that you will remember longer.
