New York in summer is hot, humid, and occasionally dramatic. A good packing list is short, layered, and built around the fact that you will walk much more than you usually do.
Clothing
Pack light, breathable fabrics: linen, cotton, lightweight knits. Choose pieces that mix freely so a single suitcase becomes a week of outfits. Bring at least one slightly dressier option for dinner. A light cardigan or jacket is essential, not because outside is cold, but because indoor air conditioning can be aggressive.
Shoes
Bring shoes you have already walked in for many miles. New ones, however cute, will betray you by lunchtime. Two pairs is plenty: one supportive walking shoe and one slightly nicer pair for evenings.
Weather
Summer storms arrive quickly and leave just as fast. A small folding umbrella in your day bag will save an outfit. A reusable water bottle is worth its weight; refill it at any café or fountain.
The Day Bag
A small crossbody or tote that you can wear comfortably for hours. Inside: a portable phone charger, a few cash bills for tips, a thin notebook if you are the type, sunglasses, sunscreen, and the umbrella.
What to Leave Behind
Heavy jewelry, heels you cannot walk in, a hairdryer (your suite has one), an iron (almost everything is washable or wrinkle-friendly if you choose well). Pack lighter than feels comfortable. New York is the kind of city where you will want to bring something home.
